Did you know that sweet potato is one of the most important crops in the world? This sweet and nutritious root vegetable is consumed in many countries and has multiple health benefits. However, sweet potato also requires special care during processing and storage, as it can be susceptible to microbial contamination and spoilage.

That’s why we’re going to tell you how a leading company in disinfection solutions, Roam Technology, has developed an innovative and sustainable method to guarantee the quality and safety of sweet potato washing water, using its Huwa-San TR-50.

What is Huwa-San TR-50 and how does it work?

Huwa-San TR-50 is a registered biocide based on silver-stabilized hydrogen peroxide. This product has a broad spectrum of action against bacteria, fungi, viruses and spores, and is capable of eliminating them in a matter of minutes. In addition, Huwa-San TR-50 is environmentally friendly, as it decomposes into water and oxygen without leaving toxic residues.

Huwa-San TR-50 can be applied to sweet potato washing water by continuous or shock dosing, depending on the water conditions and level of contamination. The aim is to maintain a residual concentration of Huwa-San TR-50 in the water that ensures effective and long-lasting disinfection.

What are the benefits of washing sweet potatoes?

Using Huwa-San TR-50 for washing sweet potatoes has several advantages for both producers and consumers. These include:

  • It improves the quality and shelf life of sweet potatoes by preventing the proliferation of microorganisms that can cause them to rot or alter their flavor and appearance.
  • Reduces the risk of cross-contamination between sweet potatoes and washing water, helping to prevent potential foodborne illnesses.
  • Saves water and resources by allowing the recycling of wash water without losing its disinfectant effectiveness.
  • It protects the environment by not generating harmful by-products or affecting the ecological balance of water.

How has the effectiveness of washing sweet potatoes been proven?

To demonstrate the effectiveness of Huwa-San TR-50 for washing sweet potatoes, Roam Technology collaborated with the Spanish laboratory LABORATORIO AGRAMA, which carried out several tests in sweet potato handling warehouses. These tests compared the microbial count of the washing water before and after treatment with Huwa-San TR-50, as well as the microbial count of sweet potatoes washed with treated and untreated water.

The results were very positive, as a significant reduction in bacteria and fungi was observed both in the water and in the sweet potatoes after applying Huwa-San TR-50. In addition, we at ZERYA Producciones sin Residuos S.L. recommend it since it was proven that the product did not negatively affect the organoleptic quality of the sweet potato, but rather preserved it.

Washing and cooling carrots

Carrots are a crop that is exposed to different sources of microbial contamination, such as soil, water, animals, insects or handlers. They can be contaminated with a variety of different pathogens, such as Pseudomonas spp., E. coli, Salmonella, Yersinia and Shigella. These microorganisms can be pathogens that affect the health of consumers or reduce the shelf life and quality of the product.

It is therefore essential to wash and cool carrots properly before they are sold. These operations are intended to remove traces of soil and other impurities, as well as to lower the temperature of the product to improve its preservation.

However, the water used for these operations can also be a source of contamination if not treated properly. Using recycled water or contact with other contaminated produce can lead to the transfer of microorganisms to the product and increase the risk of foodborne illness.

To avoid this problem, it is necessary to disinfect the washing and cooling water with a product that is effective, safe and environmentally friendly. This is where the Huwa-San TR 50 biocide based on silver-stabilized hydrogen peroxide from Roam Technology comes into play.

Roam Technology has carried out several trials in Andalusian cooperatives to demonstrate the effectiveness of Huwa-San TR-50 in disinfecting carrot washing and cooling water.

Huwa-San has a broad spectrum of action against bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores, and is able to eliminate the most common pathogens found in carrots, such as those already mentioned. In addition, it has a residual effect that prevents recontamination of water and the product.

Huwa-San TR-50 can be applied to both recycled water and hydrocooler water, through continuous dosing that adjusts to the flow rate and level of water contamination. Its use does not generate toxic by-products or chemical waste, making it an ecological, sustainable solution certified zero waste by ZERYA.
